Position Title:               Environmental Health Worker

Accountability:          Reports to the Environmental Health Coordinator

 

Key Objectives:          

To assist the Environmental Health Coordinator:

  • in achieving a high standard of environmental health within the Fitzroy Valley;
  • To ensure the successful delivery of sustainable environmental health programs to the communities of the Fitzroy Valley;
  • To provide Aboriginal Communities with advice and assistance on matters relating to Environmental Health and Dog health;
  • To regularly undertake site visits to accessible Aboriginal Communities in relation to matters of Environmental Health.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to, promote and adhere to the philosophy and policy of the Nindilingarri Cultural Health Services;
  • Provide a strong advocacy role within NCHS and with other services to increase awareness of the central role that Environmental Health has in achieving optimal health for Fitzroy Valley communities;
  • Foster local capacity building;
  • Act in a manner which is responsive to the shared and individual cultural needs of people living in the Fitzroy Valley;

Duty Statement

All or any of the following duties may be required by employee:

NCHS Environmental Health Program:

  • Work with Environmental Health Team Coordinator and the EH team to ensure overall program goals as set down in the EH Action Plan and timely reporting are met in accordance with NCHS funding body requirements;
  • Work as a productive member of the Environmental Health team;
  • Visit outlying communities as needed to support and work with the Remote Team members to assist them to successfully deliver services remotely;
  • Work with community groups, community councils, other key stakeholders (including the Shire) to implement environmental health programs in the Fitzroy Valley;
  • Participate in consultations with community members;
  • Work with the Health Promotion Team in developing Health Promotion initiatives for the future;
  • Assist with recording and compiling information from completed activities for reporting purposes;
  • Work within the Fitzroy Valley Health Partnership to develop processes to provide integrated, holistic and culturally appropriate health care;
  • Participate in the development of resources and delivery of health education material to individuals and groups in the Fitzroy Valley;
  • Participate in the research, planning, development and implementation of new Environmental Health programs;
  • Participate in ongoing staff training and professional development as appropriate;
  • Be regular in attendance and reliability as per contracted hours;
  • Support working relationships with other service providers in the Fitzroy Valley and Kimberley Region;
  • Maintain appropriate OS&H standards in the workplace at all times;
  • Other duties as reasonably required by Supervisor.

Aboriginal Environmental Health Worker Training:

  • Actively support the Aboriginal Environmental Health Worker (AEHW) training and assist prospective students to register training and become involved with the NCHS team;
  • Support trainee staff to achieve required outcomes and training goals;
  • With the Environmental Health Team, provide support to students of Environmental Health in the community to practice and develop their skills.

General Duties:

  • Promote an optimum level of professional and personal development by attending and participating in ongoing internal and external training and staff development programs;
  • Support and participate in accreditation and quality improvement processes and activities at NCHS;
  • Maintain appropriate OH&S standards in the workplace at all times;
  • Other duties as reasonably required by Coordinator.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

Ability to work within a team environment.

Basic interpersonal skills.

Basic problem solving and analytical skills.

Good organisational skills.

Ability to deliver Environmental Health packages and presentations that are focussed on children and adult audiences in Aboriginal Communities.

Willingness to undertake further training.

Basic knowledge of Aboriginal Health issues.

Desirable:

Qualification in Environmental Health

Experience in driving 4WD vehicles in off-road environment.

Experience in the use of communication systems (2 way etc).
