Maxima offers some exciting opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to complete a variety School-Based Traineeships (SBT) to senior students, allowing you to combine your secondary school studies with paid employment as an apprentice or trainee (on-the-job training) and off-the job training.
A School Based Traineeship is more than just a part-time job, or Work Experience. School Based Traineeships are a great way to set yourself up for the career you want while completing senior years of secondary education, either as part of vocational or ATAR pathways.
How does it work?
Throughout the SBT you will undertake nationally accredited training and must progress through your work at an acceptable rate to remain in the program. Your SBT completion rests on the training completion and this may also impact your ability to graduate Year 12.
For the life of the SBT you must remain enrolled at high school (sorry, home school doesn’t count), and maintain strong attendance and grades. You will have immense support from a range of stakeholders, so best access them for support when needed
Each Australian state and territory government has a training authority (STA) that administers vocational education and training (VET), registering training organisations and accrediting courses. The STA also overseas
all training contracts and on occasions makes contact with
Apprentices/Trainees.
Costs?
Absolutely none! No costs will ever be passed on to you as SBT and if at any stage you are required to pay for something check with Maxima first. Maxima pays for your nationally accredited training fees if any are applicable.

Who is involved?
School
To be eligible you must be enrolled at school and studying Year 10, 11 or 12, and the school must
endorse you to be eligible for a SBT.
Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
Will deliver your nationally accredited training.
Maxima (legal employer)
Provides mentoring support for life of SBT, career guidance, is a central point of contact for the
SBT program, and pays your wages!
Host Employer (where you undertake your placement)
Provides on-job training and support, supervision, and industry experience.
Australian Apprentice Support Network (AASN)
Responsible for the Contract of Training (CoT) and govern the SBT for the life of the program. They
may also visit you at work throughout the SBT.
Parents/Guardians/family
Your first and most important line of support in a SBT. They must sign your CoT before you can
start, and they may be your transport to and from work or school or training, and assist you with
many other needs for the life of the SBT so please stay in their good books.

Nations Peoples. For over 12 years, Maxima’s Indigenous-led IEP team have worked with some of
Australia’s largest employers providing Indigenous people with full-time, part-time and
school-based training and employment.

We provide ongoing support as you progress along your training pathway

Your training contract is with Maxima, so we place you with a Host Employer

We will arrange enrolment in your job aligned study course

Administration and allowances are all handled by Maxima

We pay your wages and allowances in line with the relevant Award Rate

We arrange, and pay for your training

We provide all relevant safety equipment before you start
