Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services Ltd (KAMS) is a regional Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service focused on providing a collective voice and support for member services across the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Established in 1986, KAMS aims to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people through advocacy, support, and the provision of quality healthcare services.

Position Overview

The Youth Engagement Officer at headspace Broome is pivotal in developing and implementing initiatives aimed at enhancing youth participation and community engagement. This role focuses on providing accessible information and support to young people, their families, and the broader community, facilitating connections to health and wellbeing resources.

Key responsibilities include overseeing the engagement team, co-designing community events, and delivering psychoeducation and care coordination as part of an interdisciplinary team. The position requires a proactive approach to community awareness and the promotion of headspace services, ensuring they are culturally and contextually relevant.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement community awareness strategies to promote mental health literacy.
  • Co-ordinate the Youth Advisory Committee to ensure ongoing youth involvement in program development.
  • Engage with local services to enhance understanding of headspace pathways and reduce barriers to access.
  • Supervise and support the engagement team, including peer workers and trainees, to achieve service objectives.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess a combination of relevant qualifications and experience in youth work, alongside exceptional communication skills. They will be adaptable to the needs of a primary health service and demonstrate a commitment to working within a culturally diverse environment.

  • Tertiary qualification in youth work or a relevant field.
  • Experience in engaging young people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proven capability in supervising and coordinating youth-focused staff.
  • Willingness to obtain relevant certifications and checks.

Additionally, understanding the mental health sector and local community dynamics in the Kimberley region is advantageous. A local Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background is highly valued.

Salary & Benefits

  • Base salary $70,473 per annum p.a
  • District Allowance $2,920 (single), $5,840 (with dependant)
  • Electricity Allowance $1,440
  • Accommodation Allowance $7,800
  • Salary packaging of up to $30,000
