About the Project

Kimberley Mineral Sands Pty Ltd (KMS) is a 50/50 joint venture between Sheffield Resources Limited and YGH Australia Investment Pty Ltd (Yansteel). The Thunderbird Mineral Sands Project (Thunderbird) is located mid-way between Derby and Broome, in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Thunderbird is one of the largest and highest-grade zircon mineral sands deposits in the world and contains valuable heavy minerals including ilmenite, zircon, leucoxene, and rutile, which are extracted and exported via the Port of Broome.

About the Role

Residing in the West Kimberley and reporting to the Superintendent Metallurgy, this is an exciting opportunity for a Metallurgical Technician to join our growing mining company.

This role will be responsible for taking routine and non-routine plant and stockpile samples. The results of these surveys generate the data for the metallurgy department to track plant performance, identify areas of opportunity, and improve production forecasting.

The Metallurgical Technician will assist in the duties of conducting routine plant hygiene checks which can include equipment cleaning, dust monitoring and plant gamma surveys.  This will include confirmation checks to ensure plant instrumentation and equipment are operating as intended.

The Metallurgical Technician may be tasked, with guidance and approval from the plant metallurgist, to make remedial minor plant configuration adjustments (splitter positions, machine amperage, flowrates, etc.) in response from the surveys and results they have produced.

The Metallurgical Technician will also be expected to cover the plant metallurgist role and potentially routine lab work during absences.

Site based roster:  Roster will be confirmed in line with work requirements, however the successful candidate will need to bus in and out of Broome or Derby

Key Responsibilities

  • Routine plant and stockpile surveys to confirm production trends, plant operations and areas of opportunity for the business to improve
  • Assist with plant hygiene, including cleaning of equipment, dust monitoring and gamma surveys
  • Conduct sampling programs to confirm plant instrumentation is reading accurately
  • Escalate findings to the plant metallurgist or superintendent of metallurgy.  Work with the metallurgy team to make remedial actions to plant configurations as required
  • Work with metallurgists on plant projects when available
  • Develop metallurgy and laboratory skill sets, and become available to provide cover for metallurgists and laboratory technicians

 

About You

  • Current WA C-Class driver’s license
  • Experience in heavy industry
  • Interest in science or engineering
  • Interest in optimisation and continuous improvement
  • Further education (TAFE or university) in a STEM related field
  • Experience in mineral processing, operations, laboratory work or metallurgy would be advantageous
